29 May
Made the long train trip on Trenitalia from San Angilo to Napoli and then onto Firenzi. Hired a little yellow Fiat and drove to San Gimignano. 2 near misses with the ‘other’ side of the road thing. A rather nervous and less hysteric Santa this time. Booked into Borgo Montauto and marvelled at the spectacular view we had of the “city of Towers” – San Gimignano, bathed in the warm evening light.
30 May
Explored San Gimignano and the walled city of Volterra. Enjoyed some wine tasting at Villa Pietrafitta.
31 May
Went to Siena. Walked through the old city. To the spectacular square (plaza). Got caught in a sudden Tuscan downpour and took shelter in an amusement park. We then made our way back to San Gimignano and warmed our chilled bodies with some wine tasting at Villa Pietrafitta. Some tasty wines, enjoyed with cheese, bread and olive oil. Lydia, one of the family owned estate was an excellent host.
1 June
Visited Pisa and viewed the infamous ‘leaning tower of Pisa’. Drove back along the coastline and stopped at a few beaches. A bit of an overcast day, so not much activity there. Then headed back inland to San Gimignano.

2 June
Explored the Chianti region – Castellino in Chianti and Radda in Chianti. Did some wine tasting. Then in the late afternoon we went to the Colle di Va d’ Elsa.
3 June
Drove from San Gimignano to Firenzi (Florence). Walked around the inner city for the day and witnessed the Dome and the statue of David. Then caught the train to Venice. What an introduction as we walked out of the station. Enjoyed a relaxing and romantic dinner on the warm summer evening.
4 June
Got lost in Venice! Amongst a ‘million’ alleyways and waterways. Marvelled at St Marco’s square, so rich in history and the Rialto bridge.
